Most people picture only one kremlin in Russia, the one in Moscow. But the word simply means fortress, and the country is dotted with them. The finest you have probably never heard of crowns a steep bluff in Nizhny Novgorod, 400 kilometres east of the capital, where the Oka River empties into the mighty Volga. Its red-brick walls have guarded this river junction for five centuries, and unlike many, this fortress was never taken by storm.

Walls That Climb a Hillside
Completed in the 1510s, the kremlin is unusual because it is not flat: its walls and thirteen towers tumble dramatically down the slope toward the river and climb back up again, following the contours of the land. You can walk almost the entire two-kilometre circuit along the restored ramparts, and the changing height gives you a constantly shifting view, city on one side, the vast river plain on the other.

A Fortress That Held the Line
During Russia early 17th-century Time of Troubles, when Poles occupied Moscow, it was from Nizhny Novgorod that the merchant Kuzma Minin and Prince Pozharsky raised the volunteer army that liberated the capital. That story made this kremlin a patriotic shrine, and a monument near St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral, inside the walls, marks Minin grave. Knowing this turns a pretty wall into the birthplace of a national legend.

Views, Cathedrals and an Open-Air Museum
Inside, the grounds hold the cathedral, government buildings and an open-air exhibition of Soviet-era military hardware, including tanks and a fighter jet. But the real prize is the view from the upper walls and the nearby overlooks: the confluence of two great rivers spread out beneath you, barges drifting past and the far bank vanishing into haze. Time your visit for late afternoon light.
The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is everything a fortress should be: ancient, undefeated and spectacularly sited above two rivers. Start your visit here, walk the walls end to end, and let this overlooked citadel rewrite what you thought a Russian kremlin could be.
