Fátima, in central Portugal, is one of the great Marian pilgrimage sites of the Catholic world, visited by millions each year since the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. This complete guide brings together our articles on the sanctuary, the pilgrim experience and where to stay, and sets out the practical basics for planning a visit.

Who Comes Here
Catholic pilgrims from around the world, and especially from Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking countries, come to pray the rosary at the Chapel of the Apparitions and take part in the candlelight processions. Many arrive on foot, walking for days across Portugal to reach the sanctuary.
When to Visit
The pilgrimage season runs from May to October, and the 13th of each month – above all 13 May and 13 October – draws the largest crowds. For a quieter, more reflective visit, choose another date. The evening candlelight procession is a highlight at any time of year.
Getting There
Fátima lies about 130 kilometres north of Lisbon and is easily reached by bus or car; many visitors come on a day trip or as part of a wider tour of central Portugal. The sanctuary, the Chapel of the Apparitions and the children’s village of Aljustrel are all within or close to the town and explored on foot.
