Pont Alexandre III, Paris: the City’s Most Beautiful Bridge

The ornate Pont Alexandre III

Widely regarded as the most beautiful bridge in Paris, the Pont Alexandre III is a glittering masterpiece of Belle Époque extravagance. Spanning the Seine in a single graceful arch, it’s adorned with gilded statues, ornate lamps, cherubs, and nymphs, linking the Champs-Élysées area with the golden dome of Les Invalides. Crossing it — or simply admiring it — is a quintessential Paris moment, and it’s completely free.

A Symbol of Friendship

The bridge was built for the 1900 World’s Fair and named after Tsar Alexander III of Russia, to celebrate the alliance between France and Russia. Its foundation stone was laid by his son, Tsar Nicholas II. Engineered as a single, low, wide arch so as not to obstruct the view along the Seine, it was a technical marvel of its day, as well as a glorious display of artistry.

Gilded Splendor

The Pont Alexandre III is a riot of decoration. Four tall columns at its corners are topped with gilded bronze statues of winged horses, gleaming brilliantly in the sun. Along its length, ornate Art Nouveau lamps, cherubs, sea creatures, and nymphs adorn the railings and arches. At each end, allegorical figures and the gilded Fames complete one of the most lavishly decorated bridges anywhere in the world.

The Views

Beyond the bridge itself, the views from it are superb. Looking one way, you see the golden dome of Les Invalides; the other, the grand Petit and Grand Palais; and along the river, glimpses of the Eiffel Tower. It’s one of the finest spots in the city to take in the Seine and its monuments, and a favorite of photographers, painters, and couples alike.

Day and Night

The Pont Alexandre III is beautiful at any time, but it’s especially magical at two moments. In the golden light of late afternoon, the gilded statues blaze against the sky; and after dark, when the bridge’s elegant lamps are lit and reflected in the water, it becomes wonderfully romantic. It’s a perfect spot for an evening stroll along the river.

Planning Your Visit

The bridge is free and always accessible, crossing the Seine between the Invalides and Champs-Élysées–Clemenceau stations. There’s nothing to pay and nothing to book — simply walk across, take in the views and the decoration, and pause for photographs. It links beautifully with a visit to Les Invalides, the Grand and Petit Palais, or a wider walk along the riverbanks.
