The capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo is Japan’s northern hub: a young, spacious, grid-planned city famous for snow festivals, miso ramen, beer, and easy access to the wider island. Whether you come for the powder snow of winter or the cool green summers, Sapporo is welcoming and refreshingly easy to navigate. This guide brings together our individual articles on the city’s top sights and experiences.
Why Visit Sapporo

Sapporo combines big-city comforts with a relaxed, open feel and quick access to nature. Its logical street grid and excellent subway make exploring simple, while the surrounding mountains and coastline put hot springs, ski slopes, and seafood markets within easy reach. The city is best known internationally for the February Snow Festival, but it rewards visitors in every season.
Getting Around

Sapporo’s three subway lines meet at Odori in the city centre, making most major sights reachable in minutes. Underground walkways connect the main stations, a real advantage in winter, and a streetcar loops through the southern districts. From Sapporo Station, trains and buses fan out to the rest of Hokkaido, including nearby Otaru and the airport at New Chitose.
