Set among the trees of Maruyama Park on the western edge of central Sapporo, Hokkaido Shrine (Hokkaido Jingu) is the most important Shinto site on the island. Founded in the late nineteenth century as Hokkaido was being developed, it remains a peaceful retreat from the city and a focal point for seasonal festivals and New Year visits.
History and Significance

Hokkaido Shrine was established in 1869 to enshrine deities associated with the development and protection of the island. As Sapporo grew into the regional capital, the shrine became the spiritual centre for the wider Hokkaido community. The wooden buildings, torii gates, and forested approach reflect classic Shinto architecture, while the surrounding park gives the grounds a calm, natural setting throughout the year.
The Grounds and Seasons
The walk to the main hall passes beneath torii gates and along tree-lined paths that are striking in every season. Snow blankets the grounds in winter, cherry and plum blossoms arrive in spring, and the dense greenery offers welcome shade in summer. Maruyama Park, immediately adjacent, adds walking trails and a small zoo, making it easy to combine a shrine visit with a longer stroll in nature.
Visiting the Shrine
Hokkaido Shrine is reached by a short walk from Maruyama-koen station on the Tozai subway line. Visitors are welcome to follow standard shrine etiquette: bow at the torii, cleanse hands and mouth at the water pavilion, and make a quiet offering at the main hall. The shrine is busiest at New Year, when large crowds come for hatsumode, the first prayers of the year, but it is calm and contemplative on ordinary days.
Quiet, historic, and surrounded by parkland, Hokkaido Shrine offers a restful counterpoint to the energy of downtown Sapporo.
