Hampstead Heath, London: Wild Swimming, Views & Open Countryside

The open landscape of Hampstead Heath

Just a few miles north of the city center, Hampstead Heath feels worlds away from the bustle of central London. This sprawling 800-acre expanse of wild meadows, ancient woodlands, ponds, and rolling hills is one of the capital’s most loved green spaces — a place where Londoners come to swim, walk, picnic, and breathe. Rugged and semi-wild rather than manicured, it offers a wonderful taste of countryside within the city.

The View from Parliament Hill

The Heath’s most famous spot is Parliament Hill, a gentle summit that rewards the short climb with one of the best free views in London. From here the whole city skyline spreads out before you — St Paul’s, the Shard, the City towers, and the London Eye all visible on a clear day. It’s a magnet for kite-flyers and a glorious place to watch the sunset over the capital.

Wild Swimming Ponds

One of Hampstead Heath’s unique pleasures is its bathing ponds. The Men’s, Ladies’, and Mixed swimming ponds let you take a refreshing open-water dip in natural surroundings, a cherished London tradition enjoyed year-round by hardy regulars. There’s also a lovely lido nearby for those who prefer a more conventional swim.

Woods, Meadows and Wildlife

The Heath is a haven for nature. Wander through ancient woodland, across flower-filled meadows, and past tranquil ponds alive with birds. It’s easy to lose yourself on the winding paths and forget you’re in a capital city. The varied landscape supports a surprising range of wildlife, making it a favorite with walkers, runners, and dog-owners alike.

Kenwood House

On the Heath’s northern edge sits the elegant Kenwood House, a beautiful neoclassical mansion that’s free to enter. It houses a wonderful art collection — including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer — set in landscaped grounds. Its lawns host popular outdoor concerts in summer, and its tearoom is a perfect reward after a long walk.
