Tucked into a remote mountain valley about an hour and a half by bus from Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go is one of Japan’s most enchanting historic villages. Its cluster of steep-roofed thatched farmhouses, set against forested peaks and rice paddies, looks almost unchanged from centuries past. Together with neighbouring Gokayama, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
Gassho-zukuri Farmhouses

The village’s defining feature is its gassho-zukuri houses, named for roofs that resemble hands pressed together in prayer. Their steep thatch is designed to shed the region’s heavy winter snow, and some of the surviving homes are more than 250 years old. Several are open to visitors as museums showing traditional rural life.
A Living Heritage Village

Unlike an open-air museum, Shirakawa-go remains a working community where families still live and farm. Wandering the lanes, you pass vegetable plots, small shrines, and water channels, all framed by the dramatic surrounding mountains. The Wada House, the largest in the village, offers a glimpse inside a former headman’s home.
Seasons and Viewpoints

The Shiroyama observation deck gives the classic panorama over the whole village. Each season offers a different scene: vivid green paddies in summer, golden harvests in autumn, and a famous winter illumination when the snow-laden roofs glow against the dark. Booking ahead is essential for the winter light-up events.
Getting There from Kanazawa
Direct highway buses connect Kanazawa Station with Shirakawa-go in around 75 to 90 minutes, making it a comfortable day trip. Reserving a seat in advance is recommended, especially during peak foliage and winter seasons when demand is high.
Shirakawa-go offers a rare window into rural Japan of centuries past, all within easy reach of Kanazawa. Whether under summer green or winter snow, its thatched houses leave a lasting impression and make the perfect complement to a city stay.
