The Big Buddha of Phuket and Its Viewpoints

Perched on the Nakkerd Hills in the south of the island, the Big Buddha is one of Phuket’s most recognisable landmarks. Standing 45 metres tall and clad in gleaming white marble, the statue can be seen from much of the island and offers some of the finest panoramic views in Phuket. Visiting is both a cultural experience and a chance to take in sweeping vistas of the coast.

The Great White Buddha

Completed over many years through public donations, the Big Buddha sits serenely atop the hills between Chalong and Kata. Its brilliant Burmese-marble surface glows in the sun, and the surrounding terrace is dotted with bells, smaller shrines and golden details. As an active religious site, it remains a place of worship as well as a tourist attraction.

Spectacular Island Views

The real reward of the climb is the 360-degree panorama. From the base of the statue you can see Chalong Bay, Kata and Karon beaches and the rolling green hills of southern Phuket. On a clear day the views stretch far out over the Andaman Sea, making it a favourite spot for photographs.

Visiting Respectfully

As a sacred site, modest dress is required; sarongs are provided free of charge at the entrance for those who need them. Entry is free, though donations are welcomed. The road up is steep and winding, best tackled by car or motorbike rather than on foot in the heat.

Best Time to Go

Late afternoon is ideal, when the heat eases and the light softens for photos, and some visitors stay for sunset over the sea. Mornings are quieter if you prefer to avoid tour groups. Combine the visit with nearby Wat Chalong, Phuket’s most important temple, for a rewarding half-day.

Towering, serene and surrounded by views, Phuket’s Big Buddha is a must-see that blends spirituality with the island’s most breathtaking scenery.
