Rising above the Moskva River behind its long red-brick walls, the Moscow Kremlin is the historic and political heart of Russia. More than a single building, it is a walled citadel containing palaces, cathedrals, museums, and government offices, layered with centuries of history. A visit offers a window into the country’s imperial and religious past.

A Fortress Through the Centuries

The Kremlin has stood in some form since the medieval period, growing from a wooden fort into the imposing stone fortress seen today. Its distinctive red walls, studded with towers, enclose a triangular site overlooking the river. Over the centuries it has served as the seat of tsars, the centre of the Orthodox Church, and the headquarters of the modern Russian state, making it one of the most historically significant sites in the country.

Cathedrals and Palaces

Inside the walls, Cathedral Square is the spiritual core, surrounded by golden-domed churches where tsars were once crowned and buried. The Armoury Chamber houses a dazzling collection of royal treasures, including crowns, thrones, carriages, and the famous Fabergé eggs. The grand palaces and government buildings, some closed to the public, complete the sense of a city within a city.

Planning Your Visit

The Kremlin is entered through the Kutafya Tower near Alexander Garden, and tickets are required for the grounds, cathedrals, and the Armoury separately. It is reached easily via the Aleksandrovsky Sad or Borovitskaya metro stations. Lines can be long in peak season, so arriving early or booking ahead helps. Allow at least half a day to do the site justice, combining it with neighbouring Red Square.
