Red Square is the symbolic centre of Moscow and of Russia itself. This vast cobbled plaza is ringed by some of the country’s most famous landmarks, and at its southern end stands the unmistakable St. Basil’s Cathedral, with its swirl of brightly coloured onion domes. For most visitors, this is where a trip to Moscow begins.
The Square Itself

Despite its name, “Red Square” derives from an old Russian word meaning “beautiful” rather than the colour of its bricks or any political association. The square has been the stage for markets, parades, and national celebrations for centuries. Framed by the Kremlin wall, the State Historical Museum, and the GUM department store, it is an extraordinary open space that feels both monumental and welcoming, especially in the early morning before the crowds arrive.
St. Basil’s Cathedral

Commissioned in the sixteenth century, St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most recognisable buildings in the world. Its cluster of nine chapels, each topped with a uniquely patterned dome, creates a riot of colour unlike anything else in Russian architecture. Inside, a maze of narrow chapels and painted passageways rewards those who take the time to explore. It now functions largely as a museum and is open to visitors.
Visiting Red Square
Red Square is easy to reach via several metro stations, including Okhotny Ryad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. Access to the square itself is free, though St. Basil’s and other attractions charge admission. The area is stunning year-round: blanketed in snow in winter, when a festive ice rink often appears, and lively under long daylight hours in summer. Evening visits, when the buildings are floodlit, are particularly memorable.
Grand, historic, and instantly recognisable, Red Square and St. Basil’s Cathedral are the essential first stop in Moscow.
