Tiger Cave Temple: Krabi’s Clifftop Wat Tham Sua

A short drive from Krabi town, the Tiger Cave Temple, or Wat Tham Sua, is one of the region’s most striking sights, both a working forest monastery and a test of stamina. Its golden Buddha crowns a limestone peak reached by a punishing staircase of more than 1,200 steps, rewarding those who climb with panoramic views over Krabi’s jungles and karst landscape. The Temple and Its Legend

The temple takes its name from a cave where, according to local legend, tigers once roamed and a revered monk meditated. Today the forested grounds at the base shelter shrines, meditation caves and resident macaques. It remains an active place of worship, peaceful and atmospheric, set against towering limestone cliffs draped in jungle.

The Climb to the Summit

The main draw is the steep ascent to the golden Buddha at the summit. The staircase is long and demanding, with well over a thousand uneven steps, but the reward is a 360-degree panorama across Krabi’s plains, mountains and distant sea. Take it slowly, rest often, and carry plenty of water for the climb.

Visiting Tips

Start early in the morning to avoid the worst heat, and wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, along with good shoes for the climb. Watch your belongings around the monkeys at the base. Allow a couple of hours, and consider combining the visit with other Krabi sights on the same day.

Demanding but deeply rewarding, the Tiger Cave Temple offers spiritual calm below and breathtaking views above, a memorable highlight of inland Krabi.
