At the very centre of Sukhothai Historical Park stands Wat Mahathat, the largest and most important temple of the ancient capital. Once the spiritual and ceremonial heart of the kingdom, its lotus-bud chedis, ruined columns and serene seated Buddhas embody the grace of the Sukhothai era. It is the highlight of any visit to the park and a masterpiece of early Thai art.
The Royal Temple of Sukhothai

Founded in the 13th century, Wat Mahathat was the principal monastery of the kingdom, surrounded by a moat and once comprising nearly 200 chedis. At its core stands the main chedi crowned with the distinctive lotus-bud finial that became a signature of Sukhothai architecture, an elegant form found nowhere else in Thailand.
Buddha Images and Columns

The temple grounds are dotted with large seated Buddha figures, their calm expressions and flowing lines typical of the refined Sukhothai style. Rows of brick columns, once supporting great assembly halls, frame the central monuments. Standing among them, you can sense the scale and devotion of the temple in its prime.
Atmosphere and Photography

Reflected in the surrounding ponds and framed by lawns and trees, Wat Mahathat is wonderfully photogenic, especially in the golden light of early morning or sunset. The peaceful setting invites slow, contemplative wandering rather than a quick visit, so allow plenty of time to absorb the atmosphere.
Visiting Tips
Wat Mahathat sits within the central zone of the park, which has a separate entry fee. Modest dress is appropriate as the site remains sacred. Combine it with the other central temples on a relaxed cycling tour, and visit early or late to enjoy the best light and the fewest crowds.
Graceful, historic and beautifully set, Wat Mahathat is the crowning glory of Sukhothai and a must-see for anyone exploring the ancient capital.
