Sukhothai Historical Park: The First Capital

Often called the cradle of Thai civilisation, Sukhothai was the first capital of a unified Thai kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its serene ruins, set among ponds, lawns and trees, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site widely regarded as the most beautiful and peaceful of Thailand’s ancient cities. Less visited than Ayutthaya, it offers a tranquil journey into the roots of the nation. (Some images show classic Thai Buddha statues of the era.)

The Birthplace of a Kingdom

Founded around 1238, Sukhothai, meaning “dawn of happiness,” was the heart of a golden age of Thai art, language and Buddhism. It was here that the Thai script is said to have been created and a distinctive, graceful style of Buddha image developed. The park preserves the remains of royal temples, palaces and monuments from this formative era.

A Beautifully Landscaped Park

What sets Sukhothai apart is its setting. The ruins sit within a well-tended park of lawns, lotus ponds and shade trees, giving it a calm, almost garden-like feel. Elegant chedis and rows of graceful Buddha images are reflected in still water, making it one of the most photogenic historical sites in the country.

Exploring by Bicycle

The park is divided into zones, with the central area holding the most important temples. Renting a bicycle is the classic and most enjoyable way to explore, letting you glide between sites along quiet, flat paths. Early morning and late afternoon offer cool air, soft light and the most peaceful atmosphere.

Getting There

Sukhothai lies in north-central Thailand, reached by bus from Bangkok or Chiang Mai, or via the nearby airport. The historical park is a short ride from the modern town. Allow at least half a day, and consider staying overnight to experience the ruins at their quietest and most beautiful.

Peaceful, elegant and historically profound, Sukhothai Historical Park is the serene birthplace of Thailand and a highlight of the country’s north.
