Kenroku-en: Kanazawa’s Celebrated Garden

Widely regarded as one of the three most beautiful landscape gardens in Japan, Kenroku-en is the crown jewel of Kanazawa. Developed over centuries by the ruling Maeda clan, the garden spans more than 11 hectares of ponds, streams, teahouses, and meticulously trained trees. Its name means “Garden of the Six Sublimities,” referring to the six attributes said to make a perfect garden.

A Garden of Six Qualities

Kenroku-en is celebrated for combining six contrasting qualities prized in classical Chinese garden theory: spaciousness and seclusion, artifice and antiquity, water-courses and panoramas. Few gardens are thought to achieve all six at once, and it is this balance that earns Kenroku-en its lasting fame.

Seasons and Scenery

The garden transforms with the seasons, from cherry blossoms and fresh greenery in spring to fiery maples in autumn. In winter, gardeners suspend ropes from tall pines in cone shapes called yukitsuri to protect the branches from heavy snow, creating one of Kanazawa’s most iconic images.

Highlights to Look For

Among the must-see features are the Kotoji-toro, a distinctive two-legged stone lantern beside Kasumigaike Pond, and Japan’s oldest fountain, powered entirely by natural water pressure. Quiet teahouses scattered through the grounds offer a chance to pause and take in the views.

Kenroku-en rewards a slow, unhurried visit in any season. Sitting right beside Kanazawa Castle, it forms the green heart of the city and is the perfect starting point for exploring this beautifully preserved corner of Japan.
