Rising dramatically beside the sea, the Sanctuary of Truth is Pattaya’s most extraordinary attraction, a vast temple-like structure built entirely from wood and covered in intricate hand-carved sculptures. Soaring more than 100 metres high, it is a still-evolving monument to philosophy, art and faith, and a striking contrast to the city’s beaches and nightlife. (The other images here show the wider Pattaya area.)
An All-Wood Masterpiece

Begun in 1981 and still under construction, the Sanctuary of Truth is made entirely of teak and other hardwoods, held together with traditional joinery and wooden pegs rather than nails. Every surface is covered in elaborate carvings depicting Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, blending Thai, Khmer, Chinese and Indian artistic traditions into one breathtaking whole.
Art, Philosophy and Craftsmanship

The building is conceived as a celebration of human values, with sculptures symbolising truth, family, religion and the relationship between people and the universe. Skilled woodcarvers work on site continuously, repairing and adding to the structure, so each visit offers a glimpse of living craftsmanship rarely seen elsewhere.
Visiting the Sanctuary
Set on a seaside headland, the sanctuary requires modest dress, and sarongs are provided if needed. Guided tours explain the symbolism behind the carvings, and visitors can sometimes watch the artisans at work. Other attractions, including cultural shows and boat rides, are available on the grounds.
Tips for Your Visit
Allow at least an hour to take in the detail, and visit in the morning to avoid the strongest heat. Hard hats are sometimes required because of ongoing construction. Combine it with other Pattaya sights for a fuller day exploring the city’s cultural side beyond the beach.
Awe-inspiring and utterly unique, the Sanctuary of Truth is a triumph of craftsmanship and Pattaya’s most unforgettable landmark.
