Rising on a forested mountain west of the city, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the most revered temple in northern Thailand and the spiritual symbol of Chiang Mai. Reached by a famous serpent-flanked staircase, its glittering golden chedi and sweeping views over the valley draw pilgrims and visitors alike. A trip up the mountain is one of the defining experiences of any visit to the north. (The photographs here show the mountains and temples of the Chiang Mai region.)
A Temple on the Mountain

Founded in the 14th century, Doi Suthep sits roughly 1,000 metres above Chiang Mai on the slopes of its namesake mountain. Legend tells of a sacred relic carried up the hillside on the back of a white elephant, which chose the spot where the temple now stands. The central golden chedi, surrounded by shrines, bells and shaded courtyards, glows brilliantly in the afternoon sun and remains an active place of worship.
The Climb and the View

Most visitors arrive at the foot of a long Naga staircase, its balustrades formed by mythical serpents, climbing some 300 steps to the temple terrace. A funicular offers an easier alternative. From the top, on a clear day, the whole Chiang Mai valley spreads out below, a reward that makes the journey up the winding mountain road worthwhile.
Getting There from the City

Doi Suthep lies about 15 kilometres from the Old City, reached by a scenic mountain road. Shared red songthaew trucks depart regularly, and tours often combine the temple with nearby viewpoints and villages. The drive itself, through cool forested slopes, is part of the experience and a welcome escape from the lowland heat.
Tips for a Respectful Visit
As an important religious site, modest dress is essential: cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering the inner terrace. Early morning offers cooler air, softer light and fewer crowds. Bring a little water for the climb, and allow time to simply sit quietly and take in the mountain atmosphere.
Sacred, scenic and steeped in legend, Doi Suthep is the soul of Chiang Mai and an essential pilgrimage above the northern capital.
