When the sun goes down, Chiang Mai comes alive with markets. From the long-running Night Bazaar to the famous weekend Walking Streets, the city after dark is a feast of handicrafts, street food and northern Thai culture. Browsing these markets is one of the great pleasures of Chiang Mai, and a wonderful way to spend a warm evening. (Images here show Chiang Mai at night and a typical night-market scene.)
The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Stretching along Chang Klan Road, the Night Bazaar has been the city’s evening shopping hub for decades. Stalls overflow with hill-tribe textiles, carved wood, lanterns, clothing and souvenirs, while food courts and live music fill the surrounding squares. It runs every night, making it an easy option whenever you fancy an evening stroll and a little bargaining.
Sunday and Saturday Walking Streets

The most atmospheric markets are the weekend Walking Streets. On Sundays, the Old City’s main road closes to traffic and fills end to end with artisans selling handmade crafts, art and local snacks. The Saturday market along Wua Lai Road is known for silverwork. Both are best enjoyed slowly, with plenty of pauses for street food.
Street Food and Local Flavours
Markets are the best place to sample northern Thai cooking. Look for khao soi, the region’s signature curried noodle soup, alongside grilled skewers, fresh fruit shakes, sticky rice and sweet coconut treats. Prices are low and portions generous, so graze your way from stall to stall rather than committing to a single meal.
Tips for Market Evenings
Arrive early evening to beat the densest crowds, carry small bills for easier bargaining, and keep your belongings secure in the busy lanes. Bargaining is expected but should stay friendly and good-natured. Comfortable shoes help, as the best markets reward those who wander far beyond the first few stalls.
Lively, colourful and delicious, Chiang Mai’s markets are the beating heart of the city after dark and a highlight of any visit.
