Running for several kilometres through the heart of the city, Nevsky Prospekt is the grand main avenue of St. Petersburg and the focus of its social life. By day it is a parade of palaces, churches, and shops; by night it transforms into the centre of the city’s celebrated nightlife and entertainment scene. (Some images here show the wider St. Petersburg night scene that frames these streets.)
The Grand Avenue

Nevsky Prospekt is lined with some of the city’s most impressive architecture, from the colonnaded Kazan Cathedral to elegant nineteenth-century shopping arcades and the famous Singer House. It is the natural artery of St. Petersburg, always busy with locals and visitors, and a wonderful street simply to walk. Many of the city’s cafes, restaurants, and theatres cluster on or just off the avenue.
Bars, Clubs and the “Bar Street”

After dark, the area around Nevsky comes alive. Rubinstein Street, just off the avenue, is famous as the city’s “bar street,” packed with restaurants, cocktail bars, and live-music venues. The wider centre offers everything from cosy basement bars to lively clubs. St. Petersburg has a reputation as one of Russia’s most creative and youthful cities, and its nightlife reflects that energetic, artistic spirit.
White Nights and Culture
In summer, the famous “White Nights” — when the sky barely darkens — turn the whole city into a stage, with festivals, late-night strolls, and the spectacle of the raised bridges over the Neva. Year-round, the performing arts are central to an evening here, from world-class ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre to concerts and contemporary performances. Culture and nightlife blend seamlessly in this city.
From its palatial avenue to its lively bar streets and famous theatres, St. Petersburg offers an elegant and energetic night out.
