Hida and the Japanese Alps: Mountains Around Takayama

Japanese Alps near Takayama

Takayama is the gateway to the Northern Japan Alps, and the mountains around it offer some of the country’s finest highland scenery. From hot-spring valleys to the famous Kamikochi plateau, the Hida region rewards travellers who venture beyond the town.

Kamikochi

Kamikochi is a stunning alpine valley of clear rivers, marshes and soaring peaks, reached via Hirayu Onsen. Easy walking trails follow the Azusa River past the iconic Kappa Bridge, making it accessible even to casual walkers from spring through autumn, when the road is open.

Shinhotaka Ropeway and Onsen

The double-decker Shinhotaka Ropeway climbs to over 2,000 metres for panoramic views of the Hotaka range, spectacular when the peaks are dusted with snow. The surrounding Okuhida onsen villages are dotted with open-air baths, ideal for soaking after a day in the mountains.

Getting There

Buses connect Takayama with Hirayu Onsen, the hub for Kamikochi and the ropeway. Private cars cannot enter Kamikochi, so the bus is the way in. Check seasonal opening dates, as the high country closes through winter.

The Alps are Takayama’s grand backdrop. A day in the mountains balances the town’s history with unforgettable highland scenery.
