Matsushima Bay, dotted with around 260 tiny pine-clad islands, is celebrated as one of the Three Views of Japan, the classical trio of the country’s most beautiful scenery. Just half an hour from Sendai, it makes the city’s most rewarding day trip, blending sea views, historic temples, and gentle island walks.

Islands and Cruises

Sightseeing boats glide between the weathered islets, whose wind-sculpted pines have inspired poets for centuries. Several islands are linked to the shore by bridges, including Fukuura-jima, reached by a long red footbridge and laced with woodland trails.

Zuiganji and Godaido

The bay is also home to Zuiganji, one of the Tohoku region’s most important Zen temples, with richly decorated halls and a cedar-lined approach. Nearby, the small Godaido hall sits on an islet just offshore, a much-loved symbol of Matsushima.

Getting There

Matsushima is an easy train ride from Sendai Station, with the JR Senseki Line running directly to Matsushimakaigan Station near the waterfront. The main sights cluster within a short, scenic walk of one another.

Tranquil and timelessly beautiful, Matsushima rewards a relaxed half or full day and is the perfect complement to Sendai’s castle and mausoleum.
