The temple grounds reward exploration. Climb the steps to Nigatsudo Hall for sweeping views over Nara, and seek out the quieter Hokkedo and the great bell. The surrounding forested slopes are dotted with smaller shrines and walking paths, making it easy to escape the crowds that gather around the Great Buddha.
