Nara Park: Meeting the Famous Bowing Deer

At the heart of Nara lies a vast green park where more than a thousand sika deer wander freely among ancient temples and lawns. Keep food hidden until you are ready, feed quickly, and show your empty hands when the crackers are gone.

The park is also the gateway to Nara’s greatest sights. Todai-ji and its Great Buddha sit within its bounds, along with the lantern-lined paths to Kasuga Taisha shrine and the elegant Kofuku-ji pagoda. Wide lawns, ponds, and forested slopes make it a wonderful place to wander slowly between temples.

Nara Park is a short walk from Kintetsu Nara Station and easily reached from Kyoto or Osaka as a day trip. Mornings are quieter and cooler, ideal for both photos and gentler deer.
