Aoba Castle: Date Masamune’s Hilltop Stronghold

View over Sendai city

Aoba Castle, also known as Sendai Castle, crowns a forested hilltop overlooking the city it once protected. Built in 1601 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune, the castle’s wooden structures are long gone, but its commanding ramparts, restored guardhouse, and sweeping views make it the historic heart of Sendai.

Date Masamune and the Castle

The one-eyed warlord Date Masamune founded Sendai and ruled the region from this stronghold. A striking equestrian statue of him stands on the castle grounds, gazing out over the modern city he established, and remains the most photographed sight in Sendai.

Views and Grounds

From the hilltop terrace the whole of Sendai spreads out toward the sea, a view especially fine at dusk. The site preserves sections of massive stone wall, and the Gokoku Shrine within the grounds adds a quiet, ceremonial atmosphere.

Getting There

The castle sits a short bus ride from Sendai Station on the convenient Loople Sendai sightseeing loop, which links most of the city’s main attractions. Many visitors combine it with the nearby museum and Zuihoden mausoleum.

Steeped in the legend of Date Masamune, Aoba Castle is the natural starting point for understanding Sendai and enjoying the best views over the city.
