Polonezköy is a famous Polak village located in the Beykoz district of Istanbul. 20 km from the Black Sea coast; It is 15 km away from the Bosphorus shores of Istanbul.

The old name of Polonezköy is Adampol. Polonezköy was founded in 1842 by Prince Adam Czartoryski, who was the head of government during the Polish Uprising of 1830 and later the political leader of Polish exiles. The name of the village was derived as Adamköy (Polish: Adampol) due to the name of its founder, Adam. The land on which the village is located was arranged as a farm by the Lazarist priests who were managing the Saint Benoit French High School in the 1830s.

At that time, the center of political emigration of Poles was Paris. Prince Adam Czartoryski’s aim was to establish a second political center within the borders of the Ottoman Empire. For this purpose, he sent Michal Czajkowski to the Ottoman Empire as his representative.

Czajkowski, who accepted Islam in 1850 after coming to Istanbul and took the name Mehmed Sadık Pasha, bought a forested land where Adampol would be established in the future, from the Lazarian priests operating in the Ottoman Empire. At first, only 12 people lived in the village, but in the following years, when it developed the most, 220 residents settled.

Over the years, Polonezkoy/Adampol developed, the village’s population increasing with soldiers participating in the Polish Uprising of 1830 and the Crimean War of 1853, as well as Poles escaping from Siberian exile and Circassian captivity. The first Polonezkoy residents were engaged in farming, animal husbandry and forestry. More II. Starting before World War II, the first holidaymakers began to come to Polonezköy.

In 1938, the residents of Polonezkoy, T.R. They were granted citizenship. In 1968, Polonezkoy residents acquired title deeds on the lands they cultivated. Thanks to its transportation facilities, geographical location and beautiful views, Polonezkoy has transformed from an agricultural village into a holiday village.

In Polonezköy, the land belongs to the village residents or the rich and famous people who come to Polonezköy to rest. With the development of Polonezköy and the improvement of economic conditions in the village, young people who migrated abroad in the 1980s began to return to Polonezköy and run hostels, restaurants and teahouses in the village.

Among the famous people who came to Polonezköy, Hungarian pianist Franz Liszt (1847), French writer Gustave Flaubert (1850), Czech writer Karel Droz (1904), the first President of the Republic of Turkey, Kemal Atatürk (1937), Nuncio Bishop Angelo Roncalli, who later became Pope under the name of Jan 23 (he gave the sacrament of confirmation to several Adampol children during this visit) and T.R. II. of Poland, who came to Polonezköy with his government representatives.

The village was transferred to T.R. in 1985. In 1994, President Kenan Evren visited Polish President Lech Walesa. The next Polish President, Aleksander Kwasniewski, visited Polonezköy twice, first in 1996 and second in 2000. During his last visit, Aleksander Kwasniewski also visited the Zofia Rizi Memorial House. Two years after this visit, the 160th anniversary of the founding of Polonezköy was celebrated with a ceremony.

Thanks to the development of Türkiye-Poland relations, the people of Polonezköy, on the one hand, frequently host people from Poland, and on the other hand, they go to visit the country of their ancestors.

Today, approximately 1,000 people live in Polonezköy. Among them, 40 people speak Polish properly. The Polonezköy festival is held every summer in Adampol-Polonezköy, emphasizing Polonezköy’s ties with Poland. The people of Polonezköy invite the folklore groups participating in this festival using their own financial resources.
