Shirakawa-go: A Day Trip from Takayama

Shirakawa-go village

The UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawa-go is the most popular day trip from Takayama and one of the most photographed places in rural Japan. Its steep, thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses sit in a mountain valley that looks magical in every season, especially under winter snow.

The Gassho-zukuri Houses

The distinctive houses are built with steep roofs shaped like hands pressed together in prayer, designed to shed the region’s heavy snowfall. Several are open as museums, and you can step inside to see the old silk-farming lofts and irori hearths that shaped daily life here for centuries.

The Shiroyama Viewpoint

A short climb to the Shiroyama observation deck rewards you with the classic postcard view of the whole village spread across the valley floor. In winter, special evening light-up events transform the snow-covered roofs into a glowing scene worth planning a trip around.

Getting There

Direct buses run from Takayama in under an hour; reserve in advance during peak periods. Many travellers continue from Shirakawa-go on to Kanazawa, making it an easy stop between the two cities.

Shirakawa-go is an unmissable side trip from Takayama. Combine it with the old town for a perfect taste of the Hida region.
