Day Trips from Sapporo: Otaru and Hokkaido Nature

Hokkaido nature near Sapporo

Sapporo is the perfect base for exploring Hokkaido’s wider attractions, from a romantic canal town to volcanic lakes and flower-covered hills. If you have extra days, these trips show off the island’s distinctive scenery and laid-back charm.

Otaru

Just half an hour from Sapporo, the port town of Otaru is famous for its gas-lit canal lined with old stone warehouses, especially pretty after dark and in the snow. The town is known for glassware, music boxes and exceptionally fresh sushi along its old merchant streets.

Lakes, Hills and Hot Springs

Further afield, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu Onsen offer volcanic scenery and hot springs, while the rolling flower fields and patchwork farmland around Biei and Furano are stunning in summer. Many are reachable by train or organised tours from the city.

Getting Around

Trains from Sapporo Station reach Otaru and the southern resorts easily, while a rental car opens up the countryside. Check seasonal timetables, as some attractions are best or only accessible at certain times of year.

These excursions reveal the breadth of Hokkaido beyond the city. Use our hub and hotel guides to plan where to base yourself in Sapporo.
