Sapporo Travel Guide: Hokkaido’s Northern Capital

Sapporo travel guide

Sapporo is the vibrant capital of Hokkaido, a young, spacious city famous for its winter Snow Festival, outstanding food and easy access to the island’s nature. Modern yet relaxed, it makes the ideal base for exploring Japan’s northern frontier. This guide brings together our individual Sapporo travel guides.

Our Sapporo Travel Guides

How Long to Stay

Two days cover central Sapporo and its food, with a third for a day trip to Otaru or the southern lakes. In summer, add time for the flower fields of Biei and Furano; in winter, for skiing and the Snow Festival. Sapporo is well connected by air and by train from Hakodate in the south.

Best Time to Visit

Winter draws crowds for the February Snow Festival and superb skiing, while summer is cool, green and ideal for the flower fields and the city’s beer gardens. Both seasons show Sapporo at its best.

Use the guides above to plan your route, then check our hotel recommendations to choose where to stay.
