Nagoya is Japan’s fourth-largest city and the gateway to the central Chubu region. Often overlooked by travellers rushing between Tokyo and Kyoto, it rewards a stop with a grand castle, a sacred shrine, lively downtown and excellent day trips. This guide brings together our individual Nagoya travel guides.
Our Nagoya Travel Guides
- Nagoya Castle: The City’s Golden Landmark — the historic fortress.
- Atsuta Shrine: Nagoya’s Sacred Forest — one of Japan’s holiest shrines.
- Sakae: Nagoya’s Downtown and Nightlife — shopping, food and the TV Tower.
- Day Trips from Nagoya: Inuyama, Toyota and More — castles and museums nearby.
How Long to Stay
One full day covers the castle, Atsuta and an evening in Sakae. A second day lets you add a day trip to Inuyama or the railway and Toyota museums. Nagoya is also a convenient hub for reaching Takayama, Ise and the Kiso Valley.
Getting Around
The subway and Meitetsu and JR networks make the city easy to navigate, with Nagoya Station and Sakae as the two main hubs. A one-day subway pass is good value if you plan several stops.
