Climbing Mount Sinai: A Pilgrim’s Guide

For pilgrims and travellers alike, climbing Mount Sinai is one of the most memorable experiences the region offers. The mountain, traditionally identified as the place where Moses received the commandments, rises above Saint Catherine’s Monastery in the southern Sinai. Reaching its summit for sunrise is a long-standing tradition that draws people of several faiths.

The Two Paths to the Summit

There are two main routes. The longer camel path, known as Siket El Bashait, climbs gradually and can be partly ridden on camelback before the final ascent on foot. The shorter and far steeper route, the so-called Steps of Penitence, consists of roughly three thousand stone steps cut by monks over the centuries. Many walkers go up the gentler path and return by the steps.

A Sunrise Climb

Most groups begin the ascent in the early hours of the morning, climbing by torchlight to reach the summit before dawn. Wrapped against the cold, walkers wait as the sun rises over the surrounding peaks, casting the granite mountains in shifting colours. Small chapels and a mosque mark the summit, where pilgrims pause to pray and reflect.

What to Bring

Even in summer the nights can be cold at altitude, so warm layers, a hat, and gloves are wise, along with sturdy shoes, water, snacks, and a torch or headlamp. The descent in daylight reveals the dramatic landscape that the darkness hid on the way up. A local Bedouin guide is usually required and adds greatly to the experience.

Combining with the Monastery

The climb pairs naturally with a visit to Saint Catherine’s Monastery, which typically opens to visitors in the morning. Tired walkers descending at dawn can rest before exploring the monastery’s ancient basilica and grounds. As ever in the Sinai, check current travel advice and book through trusted local operators.
