Stretching for roughly 1.5 kilometres through the middle of downtown Sapporo, Odori Park is the green spine of Hokkaido’s capital. It separates the city into north and south, frames the Sapporo TV Tower at its eastern end, and changes character with every season. In summer it fills with flower beds, fountains, and beer gardens; in winter it becomes the stage for one of Japan’s most spectacular events. (Some photographs here show the wider snowy Sapporo and Hokkaido landscape that frames the park in winter.)
A Park for Every Season

Odori Park is best thought of as a long ribbon of public space rather than a single square. Locals come here to picnic, office workers eat lunch on the lawns, and families gather around the fountains in the warmer months. Lilac and other flowers bloom in spring, while autumn brings golden ginkgo trees. Because it runs straight through the centre, the park is an easy orientation point and a pleasant walking route between the shopping districts to the north and the entertainment quarter to the south.
The Sapporo Snow Festival

Every February, Odori Park becomes the main site of the Sapporo Snow Festival, one of the largest winter events in Japan. Enormous snow and ice sculptures, some several storeys high, line the park alongside smaller, intricately carved works. The festival draws huge crowds from across Japan and abroad, so warm clothing, sturdy boots, and patience with the cold are essential. Evening visits are rewarded with illuminated sculptures that glow against the dark winter sky.
Practical Tips for Visiting
Odori Park is served directly by the Odori subway station, where Sapporo’s three metro lines meet, making it one of the easiest places in the city to reach. The TV Tower at the eastern end offers an observation deck with a clear view straight down the length of the park. If you visit during the Snow Festival, expect dense crowds in the evenings and consider going earlier in the day for a calmer experience and easier photographs.
Whether you come for summer beer gardens or the dazzling winter sculptures, Odori Park is the natural starting point for exploring central Sapporo.
