Kaunos

Caunos; It is an ancient port city established right on the edge of the Dalyan Canal (Colbis), which connects Lake Köyceğiz to the Mediterranean. According to mythology, the history of the city, founded by Kaunos, son of Miletus, dates back to B.C. according to archaeological findings. It goes back to the 10th century. Known as a port city from the beginning, there are building remains from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. On the other hand, the rock tombs carved into the steep rocks to the north of the ruin place an interesting appearance.

Treasures in Kaunos

Caunos is a very rich region in terms of archaeological excavations as a place where civilizations were established one after another. Although excavations have continued for decades, the ancient city’s past is still not fully enlightened. The found works are for now BC. It goes back to 300 years. But archaeologists believe that the history of this city, which they determine has been robbed throughout history, is at least 5,000 years old. The fact that the Acropolis was repaired during the Ottoman period is proof that it was a region that was inhabited until recently. Excavations in Kaunos, a part of which is under water, are only carried out during the summer months. It is estimated that the places uncovered so far are only 10-15 percent of the city.
