Alanya Muzesi – Places to Visit – Antalya

Alanya Archeology Museum was opened to visitors in 1967. The garden entrance of the museum, located in the city center at the starting point of the road to Alanya Castle, is on Damlataş Street.

Within the scope of the renovation works completed in 2012, the museum was redesigned with a suitable structure to reflect the history of Alanya and its surroundings. In the museum, bronze, marble, terracotta, glass and mosaic finds from the Archaic, Classical, Roman and Byzantine periods; Coin collections and Turkish-Islamic works from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods are exhibited.

The exhibition halls of the museum are organized under headings such as Anatolian Civilizations, Ship and Maritime Section, Herakles Hall, Alanya Castle Section and Coin Section. The subject headings of the showcases in the main hall are Mythology, Commerce in Ancient Ages, Sports-Health, Figurines, Glass Works and Jewelry.

The most famous work of the Alanya Museum is the 52 centimeters high bronze cast Herakles Statue, dated to the 2nd century AD. Herakles is depicted with a staff in one hand and a lion skin on his arm. This statue, which is the symbol of the museum, is exhibited in a separate hall bearing its name.

The oldest artifact on display in the museum, found around Alanya, is a stone inscription in the Phoenician language dating back to 625 BC. The star-shaped tile, on which Alaeddin Keykubad’s titles are combined, is among the rare works in the museum.

The open display in the museum garden includes decorated column capitals, tombstones, ostotheques (ash boxes), sarcophagi and inscriptions from the Roman period. There is also an agricultural corner that explains how olive oil was produced in the Roman period and what kind of tools were used in agriculture.
