Tuesday, September 3, 1968 is a dark day in Amasra history. While many buildings were completely or partially destroyed by an earthquake of 7 magnitude that occurred at around 10 o’clock, 26 people lost their lives. During the earthquake, the sea first receded 50 meters and then attacked Amasra with big waves. Our President Cevdet SUNAY, who visited Amasra at the end of 1968, attended the lecture in the classroom of our teacher Mehmet DİNÇ, who is now retired in primary school. During these years, Amasra, which attracted many tourists, especially our valuable artists such as Zeki MÜREN, İdil BİRET and Suna KAN, was living its golden years. The delicious smells and images rising from the pomegranate gardens in the summer still live in memories as pleasant memories from those years.
In 1973, Amasra Regional Directorate (A.T.İ.) Was established under the Ereğli Coal Enterprises (E.K.İ). After this date, Amasra gradually turned its direction from tourism to mining. With this development, Amasra started to receive immigration from abroad and to experience new developments in its socio-economic structure. On June 19, 1987, with the decision taken by T.B.M.M, Amasra became the district. After Bartın became a province on 28.08.1991, he left Zonguldak and connected to Bartın.
