The detail that makes Sochi genuinely unusual is geography: you can swim in the Black Sea in the morning and stand in alpine snow by afternoon. An hour inland and several thousand feet up sits Krasnaya Polyana, the cluster of mountain resorts that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. Most foreign visitors never realize it is there, which is a shame, because it is the most spectacular part of the whole region.

A Resort Built for the Olympics
Before 2014, Krasnaya Polyana was a sleepy mountain village. The Games transformed it into a string of purpose-built resort villages with European-style pedestrian streets, gondolas and hotels stacked up the valley. The infrastructure is genuinely modern, and because it was designed for a global audience, it is easier to navigate than you might expect. Out of ski season the crowds thin and prices soften.

Riding the Cable Cars to the Ridge
You do not need skis to enjoy this place. In summer the gondolas keep running, lifting you above the treeline to ridgeline platforms with views across the Caucasus, often above a sea of cloud. Up top you will find hiking trails, viewing decks and a noticeably cooler climate, a blessing when the coast is sweltering. Bring a layer; the temperature drop from beach to summit is dramatic.

Winter and Summer, Two Different Worlds
In winter this is Russia premier ski destination, with long groomed runs and reliable snow from roughly December to April. In summer it becomes a green hiking and mountain-biking hub, with alpine meadows and waterfalls. Either way, the day trip from central Sochi is straightforward by train or car, and it doubles the kinds of holiday a single trip can deliver.
Krasnaya Polyana is the reason Sochi is more than a beach town. Pencil in at least one day up here, ride a gondola to the ridge, and let the Caucasus remind you how big and wild this corner of Russia really is.
