
Aegeae, an important port city of ancient Cilicia, experienced its brightest period in the 1st century BC. The surviving works of the city are Ayas Castle, Solomon’s Tower and Marco Polo Pier. The city, called Asklepieion, dating back to the Hellenistic Period and also famous for its hospital and temple ruins, was visited by Marco Polo twice during his trips to the east.
