Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and its beaches are the main event, a string of golden bays along the Andaman coast backed by palm trees and warm turquoise water. Patong is the most famous and liveliest of them all, but the island offers everything from buzzing party strips to quiet, scenic coves. Here is how to make the most of Phuket’s coastline.
Patong Beach: The Lively Heart

Patong is the island’s busiest beach and entertainment hub, a wide curve of sand backed by hotels, restaurants and the famous nightlife of Bangla Road. By day it offers water sports, parasailing and beach loungers; by night it comes alive with bars and markets. It is energetic and not for everyone, but it is the classic Phuket experience.
Quieter West Coast Bays

For calmer sands, head south to Kata and Karon, family-friendly beaches with softer crowds, or further to Kata Noi and Nai Harn for more relaxed, scenic settings. North of Patong, beaches like Surin and Kamala offer a more upscale, laid-back atmosphere. Each bay has its own character, so it is worth exploring a few.
Sea, Sun and Water Sports

The Andaman Sea is warm and inviting for much of the year, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. Many beaches offer jet skis, banana boats and diving trips. Always check flag warnings during monsoon season, as currents can be strong, and respect any red flags posted on the sand.
When to Go and Getting Around
The dry, sunny season runs roughly November to April, the best time for beach days. Phuket is large, so renting transport or using taxis and songthaews helps you reach different beaches. Sunsets over the Andaman Sea are spectacular, so plan to be on a west-facing beach as the day ends.
From the energy of Patong to peaceful southern coves, Phuket’s beaches are the perfect introduction to island life in southern Thailand.
