Pattaya Beach and the Waterfront

Pattaya Beach waterfront, Thailand

Just a couple of hours from Bangkok, Pattaya is Thailand’s best-known resort city, a lively coastal hub famous for its beaches, nightlife and energy. At its heart lies Pattaya Beach, a long curving bay backed by a palm-lined promenade, high-rise hotels and an endless choice of restaurants and bars. It is brash, busy and full of life, the quintessential Pattaya experience.

The main Pattaya Beach stretches for several kilometres along the city’s western edge, fronted by Beach Road and its shady promenade. The sand is lined with loungers and water-sports operators offering jet skis, parasailing and banana-boat rides. While busy, it remains the focal point of the city and a sociable place to spend a sunny day.

Running parallel to the sand, Beach Road comes alive in the evening, with street vendors, seafood restaurants and the famous Walking Street nightlife district at its southern end. A stroll along the waterfront at sunset, as the lights of the bay flicker on, captures the buzzing energy that defines Pattaya.

Quieter Alternatives

For a calmer scene, head south to Jomtien Beach, which is longer, more relaxed and popular with families, or to the small coves around Pratumnak Hill between the two. These offer a gentler beach day within easy reach of the city centre when the main beach feels too crowded.

Getting Around

Pattaya is easily reached from Bangkok by bus or minivan in around two hours. Within the city, shared songthaews (baht buses) loop along the main roads cheaply, making it simple to hop between beaches, restaurants and attractions. Agree fares in advance for any private trips.

Energetic and unapologetically lively, Pattaya Beach is the beating heart of Thailand’s most famous resort city.
