Amsterdam, which draws attention with its water canals circulating throughout the city and its 17th century architecture, has a structure that can please all kinds of tourists, regardless of their preference for history, culture, entertainment or tranquility, holiday. This old European capital, where more than one million people live in the center, is in the North-Holland province and takes its name from the Amstel River, which comes from the southeast of the city and flows into the North Sea.

Although Amsterdam is officially the capital of the Netherlands, the government is based in another Dutch city, The Hague, and the queen resides there. The state capital is Harleem, which also gives its name to the Harlem neighborhood in New York.

In Amsterdam, which attracts people from all over the world with its tolerant lifestyle and tolerance, light drugs are allowed up to a certain amount and prostitution is legal. Amsterdam is especially famous for its Coffee Shops, where marijuana and hashish cigarettes are sold along with coffee, and its street with brothels called the Red Light District.

However, as long as you don’t approach this street, Amsterdam is no more unsuitable for a family holiday than any other major city.

In Amsterdam, which you can visit at any time of the year, the majority of the people speak English as well as German. However, the best season to visit the city, which has cold winters, is spring when the tulips are blooming. During this period, Queen’s Day (Koninginnedag) is celebrated every year on April 30 with various events held in the city. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, located 15 km southwest of the city, is one of the busiest airports in the world.

There is a direct train from here to Amsterdam Central Station. It takes 15 minutes to reach the station, which is located between the old center of the city and the waterfront. For those who bring their bicycles with them, bicycle paths start 200 meters from the airport exit. Eindhoven Airport and Rotterdam Airport are the other two airports in Amsterdam.

They are further from the center of Amsterdam and you have to take a bus to reach the train station.

Amsterdam has remarkable museums such as the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, and Rembrandt House Museum. Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House, which has the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, also attract the attention of art lovers.

Amsterdam is also famous for its world-renowned orchestra, Concertgebouworkest.
