Blue Cruise with traditional gulet yachts

Blue Voyage on traditional gulet yachts is a form of holiday unique to our Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. Those who want to explore the natural wonders of the bays and spend a different holiday in touch with the sea, nature and history choose the Blue Cruise.

Blue Cruise is a type of tourism unique to our country. The dazzlingly beautiful bays along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts, hidden paradises that you can only reach by sea, the hospitality of the Anatolian people, unique ancient cities and, of course, the joy of being on the sea are the main factors that make the Blue Voyage special. There is a very interesting story behind the emergence of Blue Cruises, which have been around for over 50 years.

The beginning of the Blue Voyage dates back to Cevat Şakir’s sentence to being a “kalebent” in Bodrum for 3 years because of one of his stories. Seeing that Cevat Şakir’s life in Bodrum quickly turned into pleasure rather than punishment, the authorities call him back to Istanbul. Cevat Şakir, who completed the last half of his sentence in Istanbul, settled in Bodrum and lived here for 25 years.

Cevat Şakir, who used the pseudonym “Fisherman of Halicarnassus”, inspired by the name of Bodrum in the Carian period, in his writings during this period, made a great contribution to the development of Bodrum and its current fame.

A Brief History of the Blue Cruise

The Fisherman of Halicarnassus starts making short, several-day tours of Gökova on small fishing or sponge boats with his friends, humanist intellectuals such as Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu and Azra Erhat. These tours have been continuing since the mid-1950s, with the participation of an increasing number of people every year. The “Blue Voyage”, which was initially made under modest conditions, takes its name from these first passengers who chose the sea as a place to strengthen their friendships.

Tours, which have attracted greater interest every year since the 1950s, have been carried out on gulet yachts since the very beginning. Gulets, which host groups of maximum 14-16 people, are products of world-famous traditional wood and hand craftsmanship. The yachts, which were first built for fish and sponge hunters, went through a long process until they became the modern and comfortable ones they are today.

Although gulets are known as motor yachts, they also sail under sail. There is a very large sunbathing area in the front section. The middle area is reserved for a closed lounge with a bar, kitchen, seating area and dining tables. At the stern, there is an open area where the dining table, seating group and helm are located, covered with an awning, and the cabins are located below.

Those who participate in Blue Cruises start the day with the first light of the morning. The day starts with swimming and then breakfast, and after a few hours, it continues with nature walks and archaeological excursions included in the program. If such walks are not for you, you can stay on the yacht and read a book or sunbathe.

Those who like to be more active can participate in water sports activities such as swimming, rowing, diving, fishing, jet-ski or water skiing.

The best time to go on a Blue Cruise is between April and November. The blue cruise route covers an area of approximately 350 nautical miles from Kuşadası to Antalya. The curvature of the coast increases the distance covered, but it is not possible to say that the guests are not satisfied with this. Throughout the journey, either a new bay, a small village, or an ancient city lies around each cape…

While you can choose the most suitable one from dozens of different routes, you can also choose the private tour option and determine the route yourself. When you follow a classic route starting from Bodrum, you first encounter the deserted bays of Güllük Bay at the northern end of the Bodrum peninsula. Just a few kilometers inland from Güllük Bay are the ancient ruins of Didim and Iasos.

Going southeast from Bodrum, there is Gökova Bay, which is more popular than Güllük. Dozens of bays of Gökova offer incredible beauties to their visitors. The ancient city of Keramos, built on an island, is famous for its ruins.

There are hundreds of bays and islands that can be explored in the Gulf of Hisarönü under the Datça Peninsula. There are magnificent hotels and a marina in the wide bays of Marmaris, which can be reached after Hisarönü.

The coast extending from Marmaris to Antalya reveals extraordinary beauties. Iztuzu beach, the last nesting place of Caretta Caretta turtles, protects the lush green Dalyan. The next stop after the ancient ruins of Kaunos is Göcek Village and Fethiye Port. The pebbly beach of Ölüdeniz in the south of Fethiye hosts unprecedented beauties.

Those who visit the small villages of Kalkan and Kaş have the chance to see the sunken city and the Ottoman Castle.
