Alanya / Turkey

ALANYA CASTLE
Alanya Castle, whose walls are 6.5 kilometers long, is on the peninsula that rises up to 250 meters from the sea… Although the settlement on the Alanya peninsula, also known as Kandeleri, dates back to the Hellenistic period, its historical texture is a 13th century Seljuk work. The castle was built in 1221 by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat, who took the city and rebuilt it. The castle has 83 towers and 140 bastions. Nearly 400 cisterns were built to meet the water requirement of the city, which was located inside the walls in the Middle Ages. Some of the cisterns are still used today. The walls were built in a planned way, going down Ehmedek, İçkale, Adam Atacağı, Cilvarda Cape, Arap Evliyası Burcu and Esat Tower, passing the Tophane and Tersane and ending at Kızılkule. At the summit of the peninsula is the İçkale, which is considered as an open space museum. Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat had his palace built here… The settlement in the castle continues today. In front of wooden and masonry historical houses, silk and cotton are woven on wooden looms, gourds are painted in different figures, and authentic food is served in small gardens. In addition, there are restaurants and cafeterias on the road leading to the castle and on the slopes dominating the harbor. The castle is open to vehicle traffic. It can be reached by walking in about 1 hour.
