Alanya / Turkey

ALARA CASTLE
Alara Castle, 37 kilometers west of Alanya, 9 kilometers from the sea, was built in 1232 by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. The function of the castle on İpekyolu is to ensure the safety of caravans taking a break at the inn near the Alara Stream. The castle was built on a steep hill that rises from 200 meters to 500 meters. It has a magnificent view. It consists of two parts as outer and inner castle. The castle is entered through a dark hall with 120 steps. It is necessary to pay attention to weeds and ruins as it is not organized as a ruin and opened to visitors. Tunnels were made by carving rocks inside the castle. Among the ruins are a small palace, castle attendants’ rooms, a mosque and a bath. Those who want to climb to the summit of Alara Castle by following the walls and paths must be able to climb for at least one hour and be equipped accordingly. The view at the top will be worth the tiredness.

ALARAHAN
It is on a plain 800 meters away from Alara Castle and on the shore of Alara Stream. It was built as a caravanserai on 2 thousand square meters with completely cut stones. Built in 1231, the inn was repaired a few years ago and is now used as a restaurant and shopping center. The guardhouse of the caravanserai still maintains its characteristics today. The second gate of the caravanserai opens to the places where passengers will stay. There are chambers on both sides of a long corridor. Inside the caravanserai, there is a fountain, a mosque and a bath. The signatures of the stonemasons revealed during the repair of the building are also remarkable. While Alaaddin Keykubat describes himself as “the sultan of the land and two seas, the owner of the Arab and Persian countries” in the inscriptions in Alanya, he also received the title of “the conqueror of the Greek, Damascus, Armenian and Frankish countries” in the inscription in Alarahan. There is an entrance fee to Alarahan. In addition to the restaurant in the inn, you can also eat at the small countryside restaurants near the Alara Stream and swim in the tea until it is served.

KARGI HAN
It is to the west of Alanya, north of the Kargı stream. Since the inn does not have an inscription, there is no information about the construction year. It is a stone building 46 meters wide and 50 meters tall. It is thought that it was used as a caravanserai in Kesikbel, on the road connecting the Mediterranean and Central Anatolia during the Roman, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. All of the rooms have air shafts on the ceiling and the rooms are arranged around the central courtyard. There are mangers for animals carved in stone opposite the door. The building is in ruins.
