The Ancient City of Selinus is located on the slope of a hill extending like an elbow to the sea, southwest of the marina and Hacı Musa Stream within the borders of Gazipaşa district. Selinus is the most important region of the Rough Cilicia Region. It was settled during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The death of Roman Emperor Trajan in this city increased the Romans’ interest in the city and the city was known as the “Holy City Selinus Trajanopolis” for a while.
The ruins that have survived to the present day are mostly from the Roman period. Among the ruins, the most prominent ones are the walls, agora, large and small baths, tombs in the necropolis, odeon, and the building called Şekerhane (Şikarhane) which was used as a hunting lodge during the Seljuk period.
The acropolis of the city is built on a hill and can be reached by a staircase of approximately eight hundred steps. The church and cistern in the acropolis are important structures that have survived to the present day. Other buildings of the city are located on the beach and on the hillside. These structures include baths, agoras, Seljuk mansions, aqueducts and necropolis areas. The monumental tomb in the necropolis is important. The majority of the osteotechnics in the Alanya Museum were brought from the Selinus necropolis. This suggests the existence of a workshop in Selinus.
