Tokyo Tower: The City’s Classic Landmark and Views

Painted in striking white and international orange, Tokyo Tower has been the city’s defining landmark since 1958. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower but taller, it was built as a broadcasting mast and quickly became a symbol of postwar Japan’s recovery and ambition. Although newer structures like the Skytree now rise higher, Tokyo Tower remains the more beloved and photogenic of the two, glowing warmly over the Minato district every night.

The observation decks

The tower offers two viewing levels. The Main Deck at 150 metres gives sweeping views across the city, with glass floor panels for those brave enough to look straight down, while the higher Top Deck at 250 metres, visited on a guided tour, delivers a more panoramic sweep that on clear days can reach as far as Mount Fuji. Sunset is the prize slot, when the city shifts from daylight to a carpet of glittering lights.

At the base

You do not need to go up to enjoy the tower. The FootTown building at its base houses cafes, shops, and family attractions, and the surrounding streets offer some of the best ground-level photo angles, especially framed between buildings or above the trees of nearby Shiba Park. The neighbouring Zojo-ji temple, with the tower rising behind its traditional gate, is one of Tokyo’s most loved old-and-new compositions.

When to go

Tokyo Tower is rewarding day or night, but it is at its most magical after dark, when its lighting changes with the seasons and special occasions. Weekday evenings are quieter than weekends, and visiting around dusk lets you experience both the daytime panorama and the night view in one trip. Keep an eye on the weather, since clear days dramatically improve the chance of spotting Mount Fuji on the horizon.
