Even if you have no intention of shopping, the Galeries Lafayette is one of the most beautiful interiors in Paris — and a sight worth seeing in its own right. This grand department store, open since 1912, is crowned by a breathtaking stained-glass and steel dome, ringed by ornate balconies dripping with Belle Époque glamour. Add a free rooftop terrace with sweeping views, and it becomes one of the city’s most rewarding (and surprising) free attractions.
The Magnificent Dome
The store’s centerpiece is its spectacular glass cupola, a soaring dome of colored glass in a shimmering neo-Byzantine style, rising above the main hall. Tiers of gilded, balustraded balconies curve up toward it, creating a sense of theater and opulence more like an opera house than a shop. Simply stepping inside and looking up is a genuine wow moment — and it costs nothing.
The Rooftop Terrace
Take the lifts or escalators to the top of the main building to reach the free rooftop terrace, one of the best-kept secrets in Paris. From here you get a magnificent, unobstructed panorama across the city’s rooftops, taking in the Palais Garnier opera house, the Eiffel Tower, and the dome of the Sacré-Cœur. It’s a fabulous, free viewpoint and a wonderful spot for photographs.

Shopping and Style
Of course, the Galeries Lafayette is also one of the world’s great department stores. Spread across several buildings near the Opéra, it sells everything from high fashion and beauty to homeware, with a vast gourmet food hall that’s a treat to browse. Even window-shopping among the designer displays is part of the experience — this is Parisian retail at its most glamorous.
A Bit of History
Founded as a small novelty shop in the 1890s, the Galeries Lafayette grew into a Parisian institution, with its landmark dome added in 1912. It has long been a symbol of the city’s love of fashion and elegance, and its festive Christmas window displays and giant tree beneath the dome are a beloved seasonal tradition that draws crowds each winter.

Planning Your Visit
The flagship store is on Boulevard Haussmann, right by the Chaussée d’Antin–La Fayette and Opéra stations. Entry, the dome, and the rooftop terrace are all free; you only pay if you buy something. It’s open daily except Sundays in some periods, so check ahead. Combine it with a visit to the nearby Palais Garnier for a grand, glamorous corner of Paris.
