A short walk from Matsumoto Castle, the old merchant quarters of Nakamachi and Nawate preserve the atmosphere of an Edo-period castle town. Lined with white-walled storehouses, craft shops, and cafes along a willow-shaded canal, they are among the most charming places to stroll in the city.
Nakamachi Street
Nakamachi is a row of traditional kura storehouses with distinctive black-and-white walls, once home to sake brewers and merchants. Today they house galleries, craft boutiques, and coffee shops, making it a pleasant place to browse local woodwork, textiles, and pottery.
Nawate Street
Running alongside the Metoba River, Nawate is a lively pedestrian lane known for its frog mascot and small stalls selling snacks, antiques, and trinkets. The river, the willows, and the mountain backdrop give it a relaxed, festive feel.
Local Crafts and Food
The area is a good place to sample regional specialities such as soba noodles, for which Nagano is famous, and to pick up handmade souvenirs. Many shops occupy beautifully restored old buildings worth a look in their own right.
Walkable, historic, and full of character, Nakamachi and Nawate pair perfectly with a visit to the castle and offer a glimpse of old Matsumoto.
