Kamikochi is a breathtaking highland valley in the Northern Japan Alps, reached as a day trip from Matsumoto. A protected national park area closed to private cars, it offers pristine rivers, alpine peaks, and easy riverside trails, making it one of the most beautiful and accessible mountain destinations in Japan.
Kappa Bridge
The wooden Kappa Bridge over the clear Azusa River is the symbolic centre of Kamikochi, with postcard views of the jagged Hotaka peaks rising beyond. It is the natural starting point for walks in either direction along the valley floor.
Walking Trails
Well-maintained, mostly flat paths follow the river to spots such as Myojin Pond and Taisho Pond, whose still waters mirror the surrounding mountains. The walks suit casual visitors, while serious hikers use Kamikochi as a base for climbing the high Alps.
Getting There and Season
From Matsumoto, trains and buses connect to Kamikochi via Shin-Shimashima, with a transfer to the park shuttle. The area is open roughly from mid-April to mid-November; autumn colours and fresh early-summer greenery are especially memorable.
Serene and spectacular, Kamikochi is the highlight of the Matsumoto region for nature lovers and an unforgettable contrast to the castle town below.
