Where to Stay in Bethlehem: Budget Guesthouses Near the Nativity

Bethlehem is small and walkable, and many pilgrims stay overnight rather than visiting on a day trip from Jerusalem – partly to attend services at the Church of the Nativity and partly to support the town’s Christian community. Accommodation here is mostly family-run guesthouses and pilgrim hotels, with prices generally lower than in Jerusalem. This guide is organised area by area, with a shortlist of real, well-reviewed places at the end.

Manger Square and the Old Town

Staying beside Manger Square puts you a few steps from the Church of the Nativity and the old market. It is the most convenient base for attending early-morning or evening services and for soaking up the atmosphere, especially around Christmas. Expect a mix of mid-range pilgrim hotels and simpler guesthouses; the area is lively by day and quiet at night.

Star Street and the Historic Centre

Star Street, the traditional pilgrimage route into Bethlehem and part of the UNESCO-listed old town, is lined with historic stone houses, some of which now operate as boutique guesthouses. This area suits travellers who want character and a sense of the town’s heritage, within easy walking distance of the church.

Beit Sahour (Shepherds’ Field)

Just east of Bethlehem, the neighbouring town of Beit Sahour – associated with the Shepherds’ Field of the Christmas story – has a cluster of welcoming family guesthouses and small hotels, often at very good value. It is a short taxi ride or walk from the Nativity, and a good choice for a quieter, more local stay.

Recommended Budget Stays

Budget Tips

Book months ahead for the Christmas seasons (both late December and early January), when the town fills completely. At other times Bethlehem is excellent value, and staying in a locally run guesthouse directly supports Palestinian Christian families. Because Bethlehem is in the West Bank, plan your crossing from Jerusalem in advance, keep your passport handy, and check current travel advice before you travel.
