Akyaka pictures
Akyaka, located within the borders of Muğla province at the most southwestern tip of Turkey, is at the eastern end of the Gulf of Gökova. The population of Akyaka Town, located approximately at the midpoint of the road connecting Marmaris and Muğla, is around 1500 in winter and reaches 3-4 thousand in summer.
Located where the Gulf of Gökova ends, surrounded by the 1000 m. Sakartepe Mountain from the north and the Gökova Plain from the south, Akyaka is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in Turkey with its location. Akyaka offers unforgettable views to its visitors with hundreds of different bird species coming to the reeds of the “Gökova” plain.
On these lands, which are believed to have been inhabited since ancient times, Akyaka has existed as a small secluded fishing village until recent years. The “discovery” of Akyaka dates back to the 1970s. In those years, a tourism activity started, albeit on a very small scale.
Visitors from surrounding provinces and districts, as well as those escaping from big cities, began to flock to Akyaka’s copper nature and sweet breeze, which never stops even in summer, and gradually began to build summer houses and tourist facilities in Akyaka.
And finally, with the tourism boom in the 1980s, Akyaka also experienced a boom and took on its current “tourist town” appearance. Among the “attractions” that attract local and foreign tourists to Akyaka, we should not forget the otters (lutra lutra), which are the lovely guests of the “Woman’s Azmağı”.
In addition, the migratory birds of the “Gökova” reeds in the south of Akyaka, flamingos and pelicans add a different beauty to Akyaka. Sakartepe in the north of Akyaka is perfect for “paragliders”. In addition, the fame of the fish restaurants along the “Women’s River” has spread throughout Turkey.
