Marmaris Archeology Museum serves in a historical place, Marmaris Castle.
Marmaris Castle was restored between 1980 and 1990 and was opened as the Marmaris Museum in 1991. It has a total of seven indoor spaces. The barrel-vaulted entrance opens to the inner garden. The stairs on the right and left in the courtyard provide access to the walls. Two of the closed spaces covered with barrel vaults; It was designed as an archeology hall.
In these halls and in the garden, stone artifacts collected from the region, amphorae from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Ages, lamps made of terracotta, bottles, figurines, various vessels and glass artifacts, arrowheads, coins and ornaments unearthed during the excavations in Knidos, Burgaz and Hisarönü are exhibited.
In the ethnography hall, textiles, carpets, rugs, furniture, copper kitchenware, weapons and ornaments related to daily life dating back to the end of the Ottoman Period are exhibited. Apart from these halls, other spaces are used as art galleries, offices and warehouses.
The museum is open to visitors between 08.30-12.00 and 13.00-17.30 every day, except Mondays, during the tourist season.
Marmaris, a settlement surrounded by the sea in the west and mountains in the south, has been a preferred place in history due to this strategic feature. It is learned from written sources that its ancient name was Physkos and that it had a special importance among the other cities of the Rhodes State.
