Bergama – Izmir / Turkey 2

Bergama Houses

At the beginning of the road leading to the acropolis, Bergama houses, each more beautiful than the other and having a characteristic architecture, create a different sightseeing area with their interesting streets and ongoing life, and offer opportunities for people who are interested in visual arts such as photography, painting and film to experience a richness of composition. Generally, the masonry houses built of cut, rubble stone in order and two-storey adjacent to both sides of the narrow streets reflect the culture and characteristics of Ottoman-Turkish buildings. There are also dead-end streets in the neighborhood, with its wide fringed Turkish style tiled roofs, inscriptions, interesting motifs, door knobs, and strikingly colorful facades, evoking the feeling of a theater scene and a movie plateau. As of January 2002, the restoration of 21 buildings across the Basilica is carried out within the framework of the “street rehabilitation” project, with the permission of the Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board.
